The Red Star Museum in Sfântu Gheorghe was established to present the history of the communist dictatorship in Romania and preserve the memory of this period. It offers visitors an opportunity to explore an era that shaped the country's political, economic, and social life for decades, leaving a legacy that continues to be felt long after the fall of the regime.
Beyond historical events, the museum places particular emphasis on individual experiences and everyday life. Through original artefacts, documents, personal testimonies, and modern exhibition techniques, visitors can discover how the dictatorship operated and how it affected individuals, families, and communities.
Historical accuracy is one of our guiding principles. We examine this period from multiple perspectives, considering its political, social, and economic context. By presenting documented historical events alongside personal experiences, we aim to offer visitors a balanced and nuanced understanding of the past.
Our mission is to promote historical awareness and understanding of the communist dictatorship, with a particular focus on younger generations.
We believe it is essential for young people to go beyond memorising dates and historical events and gain a deeper understanding of what it meant to live under a dictatorship. What consequences could expressing an opinion freely have? How did state control influence personal decisions? And why is it important to recognise the dangers of extremist ideologies and oppressive regimes?
We aspire to make the museum a valuable complement to formal education, offering students an engaging and accessible way to explore recent history. Our goal is to encourage independent thinking and foster an appreciation of the importance of freedom, human dignity, and democratic rights.
Memories of the communist era differ across generations and individuals. For some, this period brings back memories of their youth, working lives, or family experiences. For others, it represents persecution, loss, and fear.
The Red Star Museum seeks to offer new insights both to those who lived through this period and to those who know it only through family stories or history books. We aim to create a space where different experiences and perspectives can be explored, encouraging meaningful dialogue between generations.
Although the Red Star Museum is located in Sfântu Gheorghe, the history it presents concerns Romania as a whole. Local and Transylvanian experiences are explored within the broader national historical context, giving visitors an opportunity to discover the region's distinctive perspectives.
Our long-term ambition is for the museum to become a nationally recognised centre for historical learning and education, welcoming visitors, school groups, and educators from across Romania.
We cannot change the past. But we can explore it, understand it, and learn from it.
